Rome May 11th, 2002 - International Technical Stage

Today a "Hung Ga Kung Fu Stage" took place, kept by Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling, whose principal subject was the "traditional fighting". The stage was organized by Ehga-Italia, the italian section of the European Hung Gar Association.

Actually, we would never have imagined to have such a partecipation to the stage. Sure, we were expecting a good number of participants, but not a 100 athletes (!). Groups coming from every where: different part of Italy, France, Belgium, Germany and also athletes of other Kung Fu styles partecipated too!

15.00: Stage starts!

After the presentation of Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling, we get soon to the heart of the seminary. The Master explained the application, in fighting, of the typical Hung Ga salute (opened hand and closed fist), since not all the participants practised this style. We trained separately before, then two by two, we tested several interesting and useful applications for the practical purposes. We faced various attack situations, applying slightly different movements every time, obtaining very efficient results.

So we passed to the study of other movements with the same method, that has been tried before separately. Then again two by two: this type of approach turned out to be very instructive. During these exercises the Master Chiu Chi Ling was supported by Sifu Martin Sewer (Switzerland), by his pupil Richard Paladino from United States and by the italian Sifu Luigi Martone (who corrected and advised the pupils for the excercise's right execution).

The Master focussed the attention on the principals that are basilar for the strength's application: how to get the maximum power from the slightest movement possible. From this moment we learnt how it is possible to be efficacious and very reactive, using very little movements. Being swift and powerful are Hung Gar style's basic principals.

By following these concepts, the Master showed how the application of opposite strengths, can be very important in a defence phase. He showed us, for example, how blocking movements with articular lever techniques, gives the possibility how to shorten the distance very quickly, arriving in a second, inside the opponent's guard. Then we saw other techniques that neutralize the opponent's attack and use his same strength to strike him back. All these movements were executed with a very intense footwork, based on little steps and fast movements.

The Grandmaster showed and let others train many techniques, based on traditional Hung Ga fighting; just by using simple techniques, applicable effectively in real situations.

The stage ended with the usual group photographs, and the assigning of the partecipation attendance certificates.

See you at next stage...
