Rome April 23rd and 24th, 2005 - Memorial Chiu Kow Tournament

On Sunday 24th of April 2005 EHGA organized Memorial Chiu Kow Tournament dedicated to one of the biggest Hung Ga Master of the last century.
His history seems to be written for a tale. He dedicated his own entire life in practicing Hung Ga Kung Fu, winning many Tournaments in the Southern China. He was invited in Peking directly from Guangdong Government for representing Naam Kuen. In many Hung Ga website you can find many article and pictures about him.
The idea of this Tournament was born in 2003 in Hong Kong. Since that moment we worked for popularizing this event and invited all Hung Ga Schools we knew.
Luigi and Sergio Martone, Salvatore Mauriello, Mirko Sacchi and Daniele Leoni worked immediately in this project for a good result.
We had contact with the bigger International Chiu Chi Ling Kung Fu Assn and EHGA (European Hung Ga Assn). We invited over 20 nations and over 100 pupils to participate in: but we have to say that reality is a little bit different.
In fact we collect 6 nations, while other countries were blocked by their italian Embassy only few days before leaving.
Guest of honour in this Tournament was Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling, Sitaigung Chiu Kow's son. During his period in Italy, Sifu Chiu Chi Ling worked on disclosing Hung Ga in our nation, leading Seminars that we organized for him in Bologna, Avellino and Roma. These Seminars obtained great results.
We would like to thank Gabriele Torricelli and Andrea Cazzola for the Northern Seminar (article www.s5sm-kungfu.it) and Giancarlo Matarazzo for the Southern one (article www.tigredoro.org).
Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling stayed in Italy for 10 days and he dedicated many hours to his direct pupils Sifu Luigi and Sergio Martone. He also wanted to visit other Hung Ga School in Rome.

Saturday April 23rd, 2005
In the morning, we had a little meeting with all Sifu in Rome. We spoke about: tournament organization and collaboration between Association.
Those presents:
Jocelyn Toy (Canada)
Hasan Efe (Germany)
Sergio and Luigi Martone (Italy)
Ivar Boxaspen (Norway)
Klaas Padberg Everboer (Netherlands)
Martin Sewer (Switzerland)
Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling (Usa)

When we finished our meeting, we had a lunch and then we reached Fulvio Bernardini Sporting Centre for Seminar in Rome about 12 bridges. Many pupils asked to us to introduce a little part in our Seminar about Lion Dance. It was a great idea: we collected many people. Naturally Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling led Lion Dance teachings playing drum.

Sifu Chiu Chi Ling showed us application principles about bridges: balance, movements, three defensive lines, qi (hei) use. Then we linked many techniques, but unfortunately we have not enough time to practice all: we could see 7 of 12 bridges (GONG, BIK, FAN, DING, CHUEN, TAI, WAN).
Concerning Lion Dance, we started to play drum and cymbals, then some movements. Pupils had different levels of practice both in Kung Fu and Lion Dance, but we sould easily follow Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling teachings.
On Saturday evening, indeed, we organized a Party for Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling. There was more than 70 people, not only Hung Ga friends, but also Sifu Maestri Fabbricatore Claudio and Cossu Alessandro (Tang Lang), Sifu Andreas Hoffman (Wing Chun) from Germany.

During this party, we prepared a little ceremony where we gave a prize to all the people who collaborated with International Chiu Chi Ling Kung Fu Ass.

Sunday April 24th, 2005
Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling opened this Tournament with a little ceremony dedicated to his father Chiu Kow, whose picture was put on the little altar. Inside the Sporting Centre triangle Chinese flags, poster and national flags covered all the walls.
It seemed a little part of China: anyone entering in, cannot have doubt about this event... Chinese Martial Arts.
After this ceremony, Tournament starts! Every age pupils with different experience performed in front of judges, in free hands, lond and short weapons, sparring forms categories. Compared to the last year, technical level is higher.
First of all we could see Free Hands Categories. Pupils formed a line near a square. There were athletes with a great experience, but tension was really high: some of them have a particular friendship, but anyway that was a Tournament.
Category with the higher number of pupils was Free Hands Male 18-33 years old with more than 3 years of practice. In fact we needed all the morning to judge pupils.
We have to mention younger pupils who demonstrated passion and a good athletical preparationm with a good technical level. We have good hopes for the future. In the expert categories, as usual, we could see best performances with a great technical level. Particular attention goes to the over 33 categories, where some students participated in.
In the morning, there were Schools with different lineage: in Free Hands Categories forms were fixed. Only in this way we could judge pupils of several styles in a correct way.
After a little lunch break, Tournament continued with Short and Long Weapons Categories. Finally, Sparring Form closed Tournament.
In many categories, it wasn't easy to find a winner. Many times we had more than a pupils with the same score: in this case we decided to consider the higher single score. Among all the pupils, Raimundo Rodrigues (cat. 18/33) of Sifu Klaas Padberg Netherlands School obtained excellent results.
In the female categories, we have to mention Bagni Giulia (EHGA Italia Martone Kwoon) who conquered three first places in spite of young age and experience.
For male young pupils, our attention goes to Fernando Rodrigues (Netherlands), Waga Jiro (Switzerland) and Alessandro Mastrantonio (Italy) who will have execellent results in the future.
In very young categories Welzl Stefanie was absolutely the best.
Thanks to judges, who have only less than hour for rest during lunch break. Sometimes their work doesn't seem important, but without them we cannot organize this Tournament.

In the evening there was an exhibition with all present teams. We would like to thank Sifu Claudio Fabbricatore Tang Lang School "Sette Stelle". All the exhibition was 50 minutes long: Schools created an incredible show.
During his Italian Tour, Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling took lessons in our School, both to Sifu Luigi Martone and his pupils. During lunch time in chinese restaurants, Grandmaster Chiu Chi Ling was recognized as Kung Fu Hustle actor. In that day, we could see at the cinemas with Italian name "Kung Fusion".
In all these days, we had a hard work to do, both in training session and event organizatio. We need two years to organize everything, but we had a great success!!
To the next Tournament...
