Grandmaster Siu Ying passed awayFrom Tim Lau, Secretary of International Chiu Chi Ling Hung Gar Kung Fu Association USA Headquarter and World Hung Gar Wong Fei Hung Alumni Association To all friends of Hung Gar and the martial arts world, it is with deep sorrows that I announce the passing of the great Hung Gar Grandmaster Shiu Ying, on August 30, 2002. It is a great loss to the Kung Fu world.
Shiu Ying was born in a village in San Hui, Guangdong, to a family of Chinese medicine and kung fu practitioners. She married Chiu Kao and followed him to start Lam Sai Wing Hung Gar schools in Hong Kong. They also studied together under Grandmaster Lam Sai Wing and helped as assistant teachers to their sifu. They worked very hard and became Lam Sai Wing’s favorites. Later when Lam Sai Wing published the first Hung Gar texts, he gave them autographed copies as gifts. Shiu Ying was a good herbal doctor and gave poor people free medical care, with many of them requesting to be adopted as godchildren. She helped in charitable and community causes including fund raising activities for Bo Leung Guk orphanage, Tung Wah Hospital, Gong Wah Hospital, and many others. Part of the fund raising work included public kung fu demonstrations between her and her husband, which were very well received by the audience. Because of her skills, people called her “the martial arts heroine”. At times the joke goes that she is better than her husband, as the demos were often setup with Shiu Ying beating up Chiu Kau. But in real life, she was often informally challenged at the market place, and she usually impressed the challengers with her superior skills. Her repertoire of skills includes the art of “dim yuet”, or acupressure points. She can quickly disable an attacker by using her fingers and put pressure at the points. She passed down her knowledge and skills to her youngest and favorite son Chiu Chi Ling, who is eternally grateful, and feels the great loss. The spirit of her hard work and achievements will always live on in the martial arts world.
If you would like to express your condolences by listing your name or association in a joint public announcement, and other funeral offerings including wreath, please send your donations of US$60 minimum to the USA Headquarters: Check or money to: Chiu Chi Ling International Association c/o Chih Fang, Controller 313 Balboa Ct.
