The most ancient form: Gung Ji Fok Fu Kuen

(boxing to submit tiger) Created in Siu Lam temple, it is the most ancient form of the style. His invention is attributed to the monk Ji Sin and it was elaborated by Hung Hei Gwoon. It is the first form which is taught to the practising as it contains all the basic techniques of the style as low kicks, hold techniques, punchs, techniques with opened hands, blocked and the "kiu sao".
It is necessary hard training to execute this form well because it is very long and difficult. It helps the executor's determination and forms the character; physically strengthens him and the student starts learning to check the respiration well. In ancient times, this forms was divided into two parts. Today some schools still teach it in two sets.

The first part was "Gung Ji" (工字) that is executed moving on the same lines drawn by the correspondent Chinese character (工). The second part was Fok Fu (伏 虎), that means submitting/domesticating tiger. This is a very important form with which it is possible to exercise and build all the basic techniques for the practising. For this reason it must be always exercised. It is very important because growth of martial practising is not solid without some valid bases.

The first series of movements teaches the control of the breath or "QI". It teachs to breathe and be in the "position of horse" or "SEI PING MA". From this position the artist will have to learn to move for a long time and strengthen his legs and be firmly positioned on the ground. In the next movements the student will learn to execute blocked movements using techniques called "bridge" or "KIU". He will learn also to shift the feet passing from a position to another (footwork).

All the techniques are executed both to right and left. With this teaching the students also learns how to apply maximum of strength in the techniques with minimum shifting. This beginning, much used in the fighting, will teach how to use legs and then how to low-kick in answer and use legs for closing techniques.

The form contains almost all basic techniques of Hung Gar style. Being very long in his execution, it will develop in the practising musculature, control on the respiration and, for what concern the internal development, will support the pupil in his character formation, especially in determination. A good knowledge of the application of movements, will let the pupil understand the first basic concepts of traditional fighting of Hung Gar style.
